Lumberjacks Complete 7-0 Sweep of Eastern Washington Eagles

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 6, 2024) – NAU Tennis (12-6, 3-1) picked up its first victory of the weekend with a 7-0 sweep over the Eastern Washington Eagles (0-13, 0-4).

"I think the guys were ready to bounce back after the loss on the road at Weber State, and they brought it today from start to finish so it was a really good team win," head coach Maciej Bogusz said.

The Lumberjacks took a hot start to the match beginning with court three quickly earning a break to take the first lead of the match at 1-0, compliments of NAU's Semen Agynskyy and Maikel De Boes. The duo's match would go unfinished at 5-2 due to the Jacks clinching at No. 1 and No. 2.

Maciej Ziomber and Dani Torres broke a 40-40 game to open with the lead as well on court two, the pairing took a quick 3-0 lead before closing the match out for NAU at 6-1. Meanwhile Dominik Buzonics and Jakub Prachar were pushing a comeback after dropping the first point and coming back out at 1-1 before securing the doubles point for the Jacks with a 6-2 victory.

Buzonics continued off doubles momentum, grabbing a 4-1 lead at the No. 1 while facing Tyler Waddock. Buzonics closed out the first set with a quick 6-1 advantage before a perfect 6-0 second set would secure the victory and the Jacks second point of the match.

Ziomber jumped out to a 3-0 start while facing Erik Sarlvik at the No. 5 position. Ziomber went on to close out the first set with a perfect 6-0 score before sweeping with a 6-1 second set to grab NAU's third point of the match.

Lance Urlaub returned to the singles lineup for NAU, grabbing a quick 3-1 lead at the No. 6 against Eagle Brady Thomas. Urlaub became the third Lumberjack to finish the first set, coming in 6-1 fashion. Urlaub secured the match with the clinching 6-0 second set to put NAU up 4-0.

Moving up the lineup to No. 4, Prachar was the third Lumberjack of the day to take a 3-0 start, this time coming against Arshjot Bhatti. Prachar picked up a 6-1 second set to close out the match and put NAU up 5-0.

De Boes also took an early 3-0 lead at the No. 3 slot competing against EWU's Tyler Dalos. On the hunt for his fourth-straight win at the No.3, De Boes secured the first set at 6-3, before grabbing the victory with a 6-4 second set for the 6-0 NAU lead.

Following a 2-0 start at the No. 2, Torres bounced back from a 2-2 tie to take the lead back at 3-2 against EWU's Drew Dillon, brother of former Lumberjack Daniel Dillon. Being the closest scoring court of the match, Torres found his way to a 7-6 first set victory before grabbing a 6-1 final in the second set to close things out at 7-0.
