FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (June 28, 2024) –
With the 2024 season just 63 days away, Northern Arizona University head volleyball coach Ken Murphy has announced the 2024 schedule.

Along with the schedule announcement, season tickets are now on sale. The Lumberjacks have 11 home matches at the Rolle Activity Center, including the annual Lumberjack Classic from Sept. 12-14.

Northern Arizona opens the season on Aug. 30 with a pair of matches in La Jolla, Calif., for a tournament hosted by UC San Diego. The Lumberjacks take on a familiar foe in Southern Utah to start the day before playing the hosts later that evening. NAU has won 16-straight matches over the Thunderbirds, a former Big Sky Conference foe, and leads the all-time series, 29-5. It's the first matchup between the two since the 2021 season.

After playing UC San Diego for the first time since 1983, NAU wraps up the tournament with one match against Gonzaga on Aug. 31 to mark the first meeting since 2018. The Lumberjacks lead the all-time series against the Bulldogs, 2-1.

The month of September opens at the Red Raider Classic in Lubbock, Texas, from Sept. 5-7. The tournament is hosted by Texas Tech who NAU faces first. On Sept. 6, NAU takes on Green Bay for the first time since the 2008 season. The Phoenix finished runner-up in Horizon League play in 2023, compiling a 13-5 record in conference play. The first-ever meeting between Florida Atlantic and the Lumberjacks wraps up tournament action on Sept. 7. The Owls finished with 20 wins last season and advanced to the NIVC postseason tournament.

For the first time in 2024, the Lumberjacks will play at home in the friendly confines of the Rolle Activity Center when they host the annual Lumberjack Classic from Sept. 12-14. NAU welcomes New Mexico and Tarleton State to Flagstaff who will play each other in a neutral match on Sept. 13. The Lumberjacks take on the Lobos on Thursday night to open play before hosting the Texans on Saturday afternoon to conclude the tournament. Northern Arizona and New Mexico have met twice annually since the 2021 season, with the Lobos claiming all six matchups. Last season, the Lumberjacks opened the season at Tarleton State where they came away with a 3-1 victory.

As non-conference play winds down, the Lumberjacks head to Utah for their second matchup of the season at Southern Utah on Sept. 17 before traveling to St. George, Utah to face Utah Tech on Sept. 19. The Trailblazers then make a return trip to Flagstaff on Sept. 21 to face NAU at the Rolle Activity Center. NAU and UTU have played each other just once back on Aug. 26, 2022, at home where the Trailblazers won 3-1.

NAU sticks around Flagstaff to officially open Big Sky play on Sept. 25 against the defending tournament champions, Weber State. The Wildcats finished 21-10 overall last season and have won eight-straight over the Lumberjacks.

Big Sky play continues with a quick trip to Bozeman, Mont., for another tough challenge against the Big Sky runner ups in Montana State. The Bobcats earned a 24-9 record last year and advanced to the NIVC semifinals.

Opening October, Northern Arizona returns home for one match against Northern Colorado for the Battle of the Blue and Gold trophy. The trophy was introduced last season to celebrate the rivalry between two of the most successful Big Sky volleyball programs in the last decade, as NAU and UNC have won a combined eight Big Sky regular season titles to go along with 10 Big Sky Conference Tournament championships, including five of the last six seasons seeing either the Bears or Lumberjacks qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Named after the sharing of primary colors and because the two squads are travel partners, the Bears won both Blue and Gold battles last season. UNC leads the all-time series, 23-12, and have won three-straight.

Back on the road, Northern Arizona begins a two-match swing at defending Big Sky regular season champions, Sacramento State on Oct. 10 before concluding the trip at Portland State on Oct. 12.

Homecoming Weekend runs from Oct. 17-19 when the Lumberjacks play host to Montana and Montana State. Last season, NAU and the Grizzlies split the meetings with each picking up a win on their own home floor.

Its back out on the road to wrap up the first half of Big Sky play. Northern Arizona travels to Moscow, Idaho to face Idaho on Oct. 24 where the Lumberjacks will look for their fourth-straight victory over the Vandals. On Oct. 26, NAU plays at Eastern Washington in Cheney, Wash.

The second installment of the Battle for the Blue and Gold trophy takes place on Nov. 1 at Northern Colorado.

Northern Arizona plays four of its last six matches at home beginning with Portland State on Nov. 7 and Sacramento State on Nov. 9. The final regular season road trip takes NAU to Weber State (Nov. 14) and Idaho State (Nov. 16) before wrapping up the year with Eastern Washington (Nov. 21) and Idaho (Nov. 23) at home in Flagstaff.

Sacramento State will play host to the 2024 Big Sky Volleyball Championships on Nov. 27-29 in Sacramento, Calif.
