NAU Volleyball Completes First Day of Red Raider Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas (Sept. 5, 2024) - The Northern Arizona women's volleyball team made a 700-mile journey East to compete in its first matchup of the Red Raider Classic against the host Texas Tech, falling in straight sets by a score of 3-0. Following tonight's loss, the Lumberjacks drop to 2-2 on the young season while the Red Raiders improve to 3-1.

The Lumberjacks took the lead early in the first set with a 3-1 run. They would carry out another run at 7-2 run to put the score at 10-4. By the time the score reached 17-17, it was the first time the teams had been tied since 0-0. They would tie again at 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21. Texas Tech would make two points to put the score at 23-21. Taylor Jacobsen carried out a high outside block to put the score at 23-22 before the Red Raiders would go on a 2-1 run to secure the first set 25-23.

The second set began evenly matched. Both teams would be tied at 3-3 and again at 5-5. Texas Tech made a 7-0 run to put the score at 12-5 in the second set. The 'Jacks would fight back with a 7-3 run to put the score at 15-12 to Texas Tech, including a service ace by Kendall Robertson. The 'Jacks would carry out another run, this time 3-0 to put the score at 20-18 in Texas Tech's favor. By the time the score was 22-19, the Red Raiders would finish the second set with a 3-0 run of their own, making the score 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third set saw the set tie up seven times. A kill from Sophia Wadsworth, Avery Gottschalk and Hanah Stoddard would start off the third set to tie 3-3. Both teams would tie at 4-4 and again at 5-5. The Red Raiders would make a 6-3 run to put the score at 11-8. NAU came back with a 3-0 run to once again tie the set at 11-11 before another tie at 12-12. Texas Tech would put up a 4-0 run to make the score 20-14. The 'Jacks made a 5-3 run to creep to 23-19. Jacobsen would complete a kill to keep the match alive at 24-20 before NAU committed a service error to help Texas Tech win the third set 25-20.

Overall, Jacobsen led the 'Jacks in attacks with 50 and led the kills count with 14. Avery Gottschalk had the highest hitting percentage with .500. Millie O'Ketter had the most digs of the match with 23 total. Stoddard and Robertson would both lead in blocks with three each.

NAU will take on Green Bay tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Standard time for their second match of the Red Raider Classic. Live stats will be available along with live coverage on ESPN+.
