NAU is Finals Bound After They Down Idaho 4-1

PHOENIX, Ariz. (April 25, 2025) – The NAU Men's Tennis team beat the Idaho Vandals to mark their spot in the Big Sky Championship. The Lumberjacks beat the Vandals 4-1 in a match that saw four singles matches go into three sets.

The Lumberjacks started things off on a strong note and took the doubles point by beating Idaho in two out of the three matches. Takumi Katsuda and Semen Agynskyy grabbed a breadstick on the way to their victory as they won by the scoreline of 6-1. Less than a minute later Dani Torres and Piotr Galus finished the job and won 6-2. Galus was a wall at the net as that is where he earned most of his doubles points.

Jakub Volesky got things started in singles with a smooth straight set victory, 6-1, 6-1. Volesky out powered his opponent all match, as well as moving him around the court. Volesky's serve was broken at the 4-0 point in the second set and could not quite come away with a bagel.

Torres struggled during his match as he lost in straight sets to Francisco Gay by the scoreline of 7-5, 6-2. This was Torres's second conference loss in singles this season as he went 6-1 in conference matchups in the regular season.

Pitor Galus put the Jacks up 3-1 as he completed the straight set win, 6-2, 7-6. Galus got a code violation to make the score 5-5 in the second set, but he was able to refresh and won in the second set tiebreak.

With the Lumberjacks only needing one match left Mati Lange pulled off a three set victory to send his team to the final. Lange won 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. This was the second year in a row that a freshman has sent NAU to the final with Agynskyy doing that last year against Weber State.

The Lumberjacks will play again on Saturday, April 26 against the Montana Grizzlies. The last time they took on Montana, NAU notched a 7-0 win in Flagstaff. Now, there is a spot at the NCAA Tournament on the line. The match will be played at Phoenix Tennis Center in Phoenix, Arizona and begin at 8 a.m.
