NAU enters this week with a 1-0 record, following a 2-0 win over UC Riverside in the season opener on Aug. 12.
Ava Hinske and
Micala Boex were the goal scorers for NAU, now winners of five straight lid-lifters.
Kaylee Muniz and
Taija Anderson provided assists on the scores, while
Lexi Saveski made the start in the goal. The redshirt junior played all 90 minutes between the posts and made three saves to record her second career shutout. In front of Saveski, an impressive backline limited UCR to just one shot on goal in the second half of action.
New Mexico was picked to finish third and received two first-place votes in the league preseason poll and is the first of three opponents NAU will face from the Mountain West this season. The Lobos finished 2025 with an 8-5-6 record, including a 4-2-4 mark in conference matches. NAU is 2-9-4 all-time against New Mexico, with the most recent meeting occurring in 2024, when the Lumberjacks fought to a 0-0 draw in Flagstaff. The last victory for NAU against the Lobos came in 2009, to a score of 2-1 in Albuquerque. Thursday's game with the Jacks will mark the first of the regular season for the Lobos, and Karley Nelson's debut as a first-year head coach, who was elevated to the helm this past offseason.
