Another week, another peak - this time it’s Mount Elden. Coming in at just 6.3 miles, the Elden Lookout Trail is the perfect hike to take in all the amazing views Flagstaff has to offer. Located off of Highway 89 in east Flagstaff, the trail begins at the same point as Fatman’s Loop, before connecting and continuing on to the Lookout Trail. Due to its shorter distance and over 2,000 ft of elevation gain, the trail has a fairly steady incline that includes numerous switchbacks and turns.
Throughout the duration of the hike, expect to see many different trees, wildflowers, and wildlife, the best part being the grove of aspens near Elden's peak. After about three miles and around an hour or two of climbing, you will be at the top of Mount Elden! Here, you will be surrounded by the Elden Mountain Lookout Tower and other various cell towers. You will also be able to see some of Flagstaff’s most distinguishable landmarks and buildings, including the Walkup Skydome.
After taking in all the amazing views Mount Elden has to offer and hopefully getting in a quick snack break, you can begin to descend back down the mountain. In total, this hike should take around two or three hours and is perfect for any day of the week! If you're in Flagstaff and are looking for a great hike to get the heart rate up, be sure to check out the Elden Lookout Trail!
