The Inner Basin Trail, a spectacular 6 mile hike through towering golden aspens and pines, is an absolute must do during the month of October. Located off of Highway 89 and Forest Road 552, the road to the trailhead is a bit rocky and due to several high drop-offs, can be dangerous while highly trafficked. Because of this, a high clearance vehicle and a confident driver is recommended before venturing on this hike.Â
Once you've arrived at Lockett Meadow, you will see the trailhead and immediately be greeted by pine trees and scattered aspens. As the trail winds further in, the pine trees will noticeably begin to taper off and you will soon be fully immersed by only beautiful golden quaking aspens from every angle.Â
As you continue farther into the meadow, you will be met by several other trailheads, such as the Abineau & Bear Jaw Trail and the Weatherford Trail. If you're looking for longer hikes, these two are great options and can be further explored. While the trail is absolutely stunning, there is a good amount of elevation gain when making your way through the aspens so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and drink plenty of water.Â
Following the aspen grove, the remaining hike into the Inner Basin is a just bit longer. Once at the Inner Basin, you'll find yourself surrounded by the vast San Francisco Peaks. After a quick break, you can head back the way you came to enjoy the beautiful views and aspen trees once more as you stroll downhill. Be sure to take lots of pictures and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, there's nothing quite like it.Â
To date, this is my absolute favorite hike in the greater Flagstaff area. If you're in Northern Arizona during the fall months, this trail is one that definitely needs to be on your bucket list.Â
