2023-24 (Senior): Placed second in the 100 back (54.39) at the WAC Championships … earned bronze on the 200-yard freestyle team (1:31.97) … placed 5 th on 200-yard medley relay team (1:41.49) … placed eighth in the 200 back (2:03.27).
2022-23 (Junior): Recorded season bests in four out of five specialty events... Found career top time in 50 free at TYR/CMUÂ Invitational (23.50)... Recorded career best in 100 free (52.07) and the 50 backstroke (25.97) at the CBU Invitational... Recorded career best in 100 back at WAC Championships (54.19) for fourth place in the finals... Swam in 400 medley relay at WAC's for a silver medal (3:39.93).
2021-22 (Sophomore): Opened the season with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke against Arizona Christian and Ottawa (58.14) ... Also won the 100-yard backstroke against New Mexico (57.84) ... Finished third in the A Final of the 50-Yard Free at the A3 Performance Invite (24.08) ... Won the 100-yard backstroke final (55.75) the next day after finishing second in prelims (56.25) ... Earned a team-best second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke (26.72) and 100 back in the Lancer Invite (56.48) ... Earned silver in the 100-yard backstroke of the in the 2022 WAC Championships (54.63).
2020-21 (Freshman): Competed in four different relays in the 2021 WAC Championships... Swam in the first leg of the 200 medley relay for NAU to win third place (1:41.95)... Also the first leg of the 200 freestyle relay for a fifth place finish (1:34.62)... and as the first leg in the gold winning 400 medley relay (3:42.82)... and finally as the last leg in the 400 free relay for NAU's fourth place time of 3:26.97... Had a fourth place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 55.43... Appeared in the B finals of the 200 backstroke (2:03.64).
High school: At McClintock High School, Velitchkov was a four year starter and letter winner. She was an All-City Champion all four years and even an All-American consideration. Velitchkov holds three records at her high school, breaking the 100 back, 50 free, and 200 free, as well as the 200 and 400 medley relay.
Personal: Sophie Michelle Velitchkov is from Scottsdale, Ariz., and is the daughter of Jennifer and George Velitchkov. She is the younger sister to Anthony. Her hobbies include painting, baking, working out and hanging out with her family. Her favorite sports memory is swimming in the Grand Prix next to Olympians. She chose NAU as it is close to home and for their competitive division.Â
