Kemper Wins High Jump; Tang, Elliott Are Runners-Up at Iowa State
/ March 03, 2012
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern Arizona University freshman high jumper Deante Kemper ended his inaugural indoor season on a positive note Saturday at the Iowa State NCAA Qualifier, winning the event with a jump of 7-0.25.
Seniors Pascal Tang and Nicole Elliott, the only other Lumberjacks in the meet, both finished second in the weight throw to end their indoor careers.
"It was a good capstone to a great indoor season for all of our participants," said Assistant Coach Oscar Duncan. "Especially in Deante's case, his performance showed that he has a promising future ahead of him with NAU."
Kemper defeated the six-man field in fine form, clearing each height on his first attempt. In what would have been a personal best jump of 7-2.5, Kemper narrowly missed on all three tries.
Tang and Elliott, the reigning men's and women's Big Sky champions in the weight throw and both of whom are ranked in the nation's top-30, didn't do quite as well as they have throughout the 2012 indoor campaign, but both performed well and can now focus on the upcoming outdoor season.
Elliott's best mark of the day was 63-11.5, while Tang maxed out at 63-8.25.
The only indoor meet left after this weekend is the upcoming NCAA National Indoor Championships, to be held in Nampa, Idaho on March 9-10. Junior distance runner and 2012 Big Sky Conference Most Valuable Athlete Diego Estrada will be the lone NAU representative at the meet, competing in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs.
