/ March 20, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Northern
Arizona women's tennis finished sixth at the Barnes
Collegiate Invitational after a 5-2 defeat against New Mexico on
Friday at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Lumberjacks finished the
three-day tournament 1-2 with a win over New Mexico State and
losses to No. 33 Texas Tech and New Mexico.
NAU (7-8, 2-1 BSC) picked up two wins over New Mexico at No. 4 and
No. 6 singles. Orsi Golovics defeated the Lobos' Victoria
Tessmar (7-5, 6-2) at No. 4 while Yumi Hasegawa bested the
Lobos' Anya Villanueva (6-3, 2-6, 10-4) at No. 6.
New Mexico (5-9) avenged a 4-3 defeat to the Lumberjacks on March 1
in Albuquerque, N. M., an NAU win which knocked the Lobos out of
the national rankings.
In Sunday's match, the Lobos were off to a 1-0 lead by
sweeping doubles then picked up a singles win at the No. 3
position. Golovics cut the lead in half with her victory at No. 4,
but it was the closest NAU would get. New Mexico rattled off three
wins in a row to clinch the match.
The Lumberjacks will resume Big Sky Conference play with matches
against Idaho State on Sunday, March 22 at 2 p.m. and Tuesday,
March 24 at 4 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Flagstaff
Athletic Club.
