Women's Basketball / November 06, 2009
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – In its
only exhibition game of the season, Northern Arizona women's
basketball fell 66-62 to New Mexico Highlands at the Rolle Activity
Center on Friday night. The Lumberjacks shot 30 percent for the
game, totaled 29 turnovers and went 3-of-14 from three-point range.
NAU opens the regular season at Pepperdine on November, 13 in
Malibu, Calif.
Friday's exhibition was a tight game throughout as the
Lumberjacks chipped away at an early New Mexico Highland lead in
the first half. NAU shot just 37 percent in the opening 20 minutes,
but the Cowgirls were no better hitting 38 percent in the period.
The difference was the three-point shooting as New Mexico Highlands
hit 4-of-5 attempts while NAU made just 1-of-4.
Down 32-29 at the break, NAU did little to capitalize on the 27
percent shooting from the Cowgirls in the second half. The
Lumberjacks totaled 14 turnovers in the last 20 and shot 2-of-10
from three-point and 6-of-25 from the field overall.
NAU was led by Caty Huntington who tried to bring the Lumberjacks
back in the second half but her 14 points was neutralized by her
seven turnovers. Huntington finished with 22 points on 4-of-17
shooting yet atoned for the low percentage going 11-of-12 at the
free throw line. She added six rebounds, four assists, four steals,
and three blocks, but also totaled a team-high nine turnovers.
Tyler Stephens-Jenkins made her collegiate debut and finished with
11 points, the only other Lumberjack in double-figures. The
freshman from Goodyear, Ariz., filled the stat line with eight
rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block.
New Mexico Highland's Sheena Cole led all scorers with 17
points and Jessica Armijo added 13.
