Toney Leads Women's Basketball to Road Win at Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. – Vickie Toney turned in a career night with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Northern Arizona women's basketball in a 76-64 win at Montana State in Worthington Arena on Thursday. With the victory, the Lumberjacks move to 3-4 in the Big Sky Conference.

Toney played all 40 minutes for NAU (5-15, 3-4 BSC) and nearly doubled her season-high in points after scoring 10 in NAU's last win which came at home against Portland State on January 16. The junior guard, who transferred from Lamar and sat out the 2008-09 season, also set a career-high with 10 rebounds.

“She was phenomenal,” said head coach Laurie Kelly of Toney's effort on Thursday. “She was penetrating with the dribble and getting to the foul line. One of the things we were worried about from Montana State was their ability to penetrate and score inside. She kind of gave them a taste of their own medicine. Vickie played with so much energy and leadership and it was great to see.”

The Lumberjacks posted their best road performance of the season shooting 47-percent from the field, 58-percent from three-point range, and produced three players in double figures. In addition to Toney, freshman guard Amy Patton totaled 17 points while junior forward Jenna Galloway chipped in 11. NAU had nine players score on Thursday.

“Every player that played significant minutes scored,” Kelly said. "That was the key to the game. Everyone was producing. Melissa Spaich gave us great minutes. Amy had a big second half after getting in foul trouble. Jenna was really aggressive offensively and scored off penetration. It was a great team win.”

NAU held a slight lead at the half 31-29 but came out strong in the second half opening up a 10-point by outscoring Montana State (9-11, 2-5 BSC) 18-8 during the first six minutes. The Bobcats cut the lead to single digits on several occasions but the Lumberjacks hit timely shots and pushed the lead back to 10 or more points each time.

The women shot just 62-percent from the free-throw line but hit 9-of-10 in the final two minutes to seal the victory.

“It is so big when you can pick up wins on the road,” Kelly said of a Lumberjack team that was 0-9 on the road in non-conference and now 2-3 on the road in Big Sky play. “It is hard to win on the road in the Big Sky. Montana is such a tough trip, but we are playing with excitement and energy now. This win will give us the confidence we need heading into Montana. We are going to make the most out of it.”

The Lumberjacks will play Montana (9-9, 4-2 BSC) on Saturday, January 30 at 7:05 p.m. in Missoula, Mont. The Grizzlies will have to play on back-to-back days hosting Northern Colorado on Friday.
