Women's Basketball Shakes Off Slow Start, Wins by 17 over Iona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Tyler Stephens-Jenkins scored 19 points for Northern Arizona women's basketball in the Lumberjacks 74-57 win over Iona on Thursday at the Rolle Activity Center.  NAU's 16-2 run to end the first half helped aid in the women's first win since Dec. 9.

NAU (5-8) opened the game slow trailing by eight points at the eight minute mark.  The Lumberjacks fought back putting together its huge first half run and taking a 37-31 lead into the half. 

The women began the second half with another strong run, and over a 13 minute stretch between the first half and second half, outscored Iona 29-4. 

Stephens-Jenkins put together her best game of the season shooting 7-of-15 from the field and made 3-of-7 three point field goals.  The sophomore guard played well on both sides collecting a career-high six steals.

NAU had three other players in double figures led by Amy Patton and Shay May with 11 points.  Jenna Galloway chipped in 10 points off the bench. 

The Lumberjacks shot just 36 percent from the field in the first half  but improved to 43 percent in the second.  The women also continued to improve on their free throw shooting which has been an area of concern for Head Coach Laurie Kelly.  The Lumberjacks made 17-of-20 free throw attempts on Thursday.

Iona's Diana Hubbard led her team in scoring with 12 points.  Anda Ivkovic and Marissa Flagg added 10 points a piece.  The Gaels' shot 48 percent in the first half but the Lumberjacks cut into that percentage in the second allowing just 32 percent shooting from the field.
