Patton Scores 35, NAU Women's Basketball Falls in Second Highest Scoring Game in Program History
Women's Basketball / February 25, 2010
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Northern
Arizona freshman guard Amy Patton outdueled Sacramento
State's Charday Hunt scoring 35 points to Hunt's 32,
but the Lumberjacks fell, 104-98, in the Walkup Skydome on
Thursday. The 202 combined points between the two teams was a point
off the all-time record set back in 1980 between Utah State, 110,
and NAU, 93.
NAU (5-22, 3-11 BSC) shot 48.8-percent from the field and totaled
98 points, both season-highs, but also surrendered a season-high
104 points to Sacramento State (13-13, 8-5 BSC).
“No one will leave here saying it was a boring game,”
said head coach Laurie Kelly. “I don't think I have
ever been a part of a game where two teams scored that many points.
When it came down to it, they did not have an answer for Amy and we
did not have an answer for Charday Hunt.”
Patton exploded for a career-high 35 points on 15-of-23 shooting.
She hit 3-of-5 three-point attempts and was 2-of-2 from the
free-throw line. She also totaled her fourth straight double-double
pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Hunt, who came into the game leading Patton by a slight margin,
18.8 ppg to 18.2 ppg, for the Big Sky Conference's scoring
title, traded baskets with Patton the entire game and finished just
three points behind the freshman guard from Tempe, Ariz. Hunt, a
senior from Oregon City, Ore., shot 13-of-26 from the field, 1-of-5
from three-point range, and hit 5-of-7 free-throws.
“It was a fast paced game,” said Patton. “We came
back, had a chance at the end but couldn't
capitalize.”
The Lumberjacks led Sacramento State 56-55 at halftime, three
points off NAU's season average of points in a game which
coming into Thursday night was 59.3. NAU would fall behind though
by 15 points in the second half.
The women mounted a comeback at the 8:37 minute mark and cut the
Hornet lead to 99-98 with just over a minute to play; however, NAU
would not score again as Sacramento State came out of a timeout and
Kylie Kuhns converted a three-point play to push the lead to
101-98.
NAU tied a season-best with 12 turnovers and set another
season-high hitting 13-of-13 free-throw attempts. The difference
came on the glass with the Hornets outrebounding NAU 48-37 and
20-13 on the offensive end.
“We rebounded the ball really poorly,” Kelly said. It
was absolutely key.”
The Lumberjacks have two games remaining on the schedule and will
host Montana and Montana State next week in the Walkup Skydome.
