SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sophomore Shay May recorded her first-career double-double with career highs of 14 points and 12 rebounds, but NAU committed a season-high 32 turnovers and was outscored 50-34 in the second half as San Jose State recorded a 74-64 win on Wednesday night in San Jose. The Lumberjacks saw their season record drop to 4-4 while the Spartans earned their first win of the season to improve to 1-6.

"We were tentative with the ball and just made too many mistakes to win," said head coach Laurie Kelly. "It seems like we're two different teams from what we do at home and what we do on the road. We're not able to have the same intensity and confidence we have at home and bring it on the road, and to get where we want to be in the Big Sky that has to change."

The Lumberjacks shot 46% in the first half and totaled 24 rebounds compared to just 20% shooting and 11 rebounds by the Spartans, but NAU's 20 turnovers and 11 fouls kept the home team within striking distance. NAU led for the duration of the half, opening up an early 4-0 lead and extending to a 15-8 advantage on a three-pointer from junior Tyler Stephens-Jenkins at the 11:18 mark. The Lumberjacks led 30-19 with 1:15 to go, but the Spartans hit a three and made a pair of free throws to enter the intermission down by just six points.

NAU built its lead up to 10 points a minute and a half into the second half on a three by senior Caty Huntington and maintained a 10-point edge at 41-31, but a 10-0 Spartan run leveled the score with just under 13 minutes remaining in the contest. Stephens-Jenkins ended the NAU dry spell with a three, only to be answered by a long range make by Spartan senior Sarah Plavljanin.

The score remained close and was tied at 49 with just over eight minutes to go when San Jose State pulled away with a 19-7 run to build a game-high 12-point lead at 68-56 with just over a minute to play. Stephens-Jenkins hit a pair of late threes but Plavljanin made a layup and four free throws to finish off the 10-point Spartan win.

San Jose State shot 62% in the second half and made 21 of 28 free throws while the Lumberjacks shot just 31% in the final 20 minutes. The Lumberjacks outrebounded the Spartans 42-28 for the game but had just an 18-17 advantage in the second half and shot 38% for the game.

May made six-of-nine shots and played a team-high 32 minutes en route to the first double-double of her career. Stephens-Jenkins led the team with 15 points, hitting four three-pointers, while junior Aubrey Davis totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Plavljanin finished with 26 points and went a perfect 12 for 12 from the free throw line.

NAU returns home to host Cal State Fullerton at 2:05 p.m. Sunday in Rolle Activity Center.
