Tang, Elliott Dominate Again; Chipangama Goes Sub-Four at Tune-Up
/ February 16, 2012
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Senior throwers Pascal Tang and Nicole Elliott each earned personal bests and meet titles Thursday night, continuing their Big Sky Conference dominance in the weight throw at the NAU Tune-Up. In the running events, Jordan Chipangama ran an altitude-converted sub-four minute mile in a winning photo finish with Arizona State's Nick Happe.
"Our highlights really came from the north end of the Skydome today with our throwers all having big days," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Eric Heins. "Nicole is having a huge senior year in leading our group of women throwers and Pascal is starting to knock on the door to punch his ticket to the national meet. We're seeing some special things happen each week with that group of athletes."
The spectacle of Tang, who launched a personal-best throw of 66-7, and Elliott, who improved for the fourth week in a row and came within two inches of the school record, gave spectators a fun show to watch, despite the thin field for the Lumberjacks.
Chipangama, a 2009 All-American in cross country, ran the first sub-four minute mile of his career with a 3:59.47@ and was the second Lumberjack to do so in the 2012 indoor season.
"This mile race was really the marquee event for us tonight," said Heins. "To have two guys that have run under four minutes this season is pretty special."
Junior Diego Estrada, who set the pace for Chipangama in the race's first 800 meters, was the first when he broke the school record in 3:55.46@ three weeks ago.
"The race wasn't as easy as I thought it would be, but I was really happy to run my fastest time in a couple years," said Chipangama, who returned in 2012 after missing all of last season with an injury. "I give credit to Diego for pacing me in the beginning, because I don't know if I would have PRed without him."
On the women's side, seniors Haley Lawrence and Jenne Childs led the runners with personal bests in their respective events. Lawrence earned her second-straight PR and Big Sky qualifying mark, this time by winning the 800-meter run in 2:15.69@. Childs inched closer to a school record in the 60-meter hurdles, placing third overall in 8.72@.
The Lumberjack men's high jumpers had a positive day, led by meet champion Deante Kemper at 6-10.75. Senior Josh DeKonty earned a season best with 6-8.75, followed by junior transfer Frederick Scarber at 6-6.75.
A slew of NAU throwers also had career days, including Karl Gehrke (58-5.75) and Kasandra Vegas (54-9.5) in the weight throw, and Lauren Stuart (43-2.5) in the shot put.
Men's sprint highlights included junior standout Arnaud Froidmont garnering his second Big Sky qualifier with a 200-meter dash time 22.19@ and freshman Vernon Jamison earning his season-best in the 60-meter dash (7.17@).
Aside from the Lumberjacks' performances, unattached athlete Kelsie Hendry broke the Canadian national indoor pole vault record with a jump of 15-1.75. Hendry, who broke her own record, set the previous mark in 2008.
The Lumberjacks close out their home slate with the Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25 at the Walkup Skydome.
