DAVIS, Calif. – Senior running back Zach Bauman became the Northern Arizona all-time career rushing yards leader tonight as he helped lift the Lumberjacks to a 21-10 come from behind victory over UC Davis (0-3). The Lumberjacks (1-1) trailed by as many as three points in the game to earn their first victory of the season.

"I thought their defense played us well tonight," said head coach Jerome Souers. "We've had a number of injuries to our offensive linemen, so we were forced to use some young faces. I think they capitalized on our youth tonight. I'm proud of our defense. They didn't give up and they made some huge plays in the second half."

Bauman entered tonight's game 48 yards shy of breaking the NAU career rushing record. He inched closer and closer as the game went on and with 19 seconds remaining on the clock in the second quarter, the Chandler, Ariz. native rushed for exactly four yards to break the record and end the half. The yardage also moved Bauman into ninth all-time on the Big Sky career rushing yards chart. Bauman finished with 56 total rushing yards.

"It means a lot and hasn't really sunk in yet," said Bauman when asked how he felt about becoming the NAU all-time leading rusher. "All of the hard work that I've been putting in since I came to college has really shown."

NAU struck first as Kyren Poe connected on a three-yard touchdown pass to Dejzon Walker with 6:51 to go in the first quarter to give the Jacks an early lead. The catch was the first of the game for Walker and his first touchdown of the season.

After a sub-par first quarter of 15 yards total offense, the Aggies bounced back in the second quarter and tacked on 80 yards in six plays that led to a 23-yard touchdown run by Jimmy Laughrea.

UC Davis took its first lead of the game with a 25-yard field goal with 7:59 to go in the third quarter.

The Lumberjacks got a big boost of offense from Sacramento, Calif. native Lucky Dozier when he recorded a 78-yard interception return for a touchdown with 9:05 to go in the game. The extra point gave NAU a much needed four-point lead.

Another pick-6, this time by Marcus Alford with 1:56 to go in the game extended the Lumberjacks lead to 11 points.

Both teams posted nearly identical stats on the box score, but it was NAU that scored the most points. Once in the red zone, both teams were able to score and the Lumberjacks did just that as they sailed away with the win.
