WALNUT, Calif. - Northern Arizona University's track & field team traveled to Walnut, Calif., this weekend as they completed the final day of competition at the 56th annual Mt. SAC Relays. The Lumberjacks wrapped up competition in strong fashion, highlighted by a record-breaking performance by Deante Kemper.
"In track & field, outside of the championships we don't get to see team scores often," said director of track & field and cross country Eric Heins. "Over the course of the weekend we had some bad things happen but we followed up with some good things; it's kind of the curse and blessing of the sport."
Kemper has had a tremendous junior campaign thus far this season. Coming into this weekend Kemper was ranked in the top-10 in the country and No. 1 in the Big Sky Conference for the men's high jump. The junior cleared a best height of 7-3.75 (2.23m) in the clutch on his final attempt. The mark was good for a fourth place finish in the elite invitational heat of the men's high jump and a new school record.
"It was great to watch Deante's transformation from last weekend," said Heins. "He's starting to understand that he doesn't have to go into every high jump event all fired up. He was calm and relaxed which allowed him to really take the time to execute his technique."
Lauren Stuart took on some of the best the country has to offer in the women's hammer throw. Stuart finished fourth in her heat after throwing a best mark of 206-01 (62.82m).
Kylene Knutsen represented NAU in the elite invitational heat of the women's javelin throw. Knutsen posted a best of 152-03 (46.41m) on her first attempt of the day. The sophomore reaped a fourth place finish overall.
Lauren Laszczak competed in the elite invitational heat of the women's high jump. The senior took attempts at 5-8.75 (1.75m) but was unable to progress to the next height.
