NAU T&F's Lauren Stuart Wraps Up Stellar Career

EUGENE, Ore. – Northern Arizona University's track & field team opened up competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship Final. Lauren Stuart was the first to represent NAU on the campus of the University of Oregon as she used her talents in the women's hammer throw.

Stuart opened up the day with a toss of 195-3 (59.53m) on her first attempt. Following her initial attempt, Stuart rebounded with what would be her top mark on the day throwing 202-7 (61.74m). The senior's effort was good for fifth place in her flight, but fell just short of advancing to the final competition.

"To see Lauren develop as a person and athlete the way she has is a testament to her having a joyous experience here at NAU," said associate head coach Oscar Duncan. "I take a lot of pride in the fact that Lauren will continue her career to see what else she can accomplish."

Today's events served as the final competition in Lumberjack uniform for Stuart. Stuart leaves NAU as the record holder in both the weight throw and hammer throw and is poised to go down as one of the top track & field athletes in school history.

"I couldn't have asked for anything better from my career," said Stuart. "I've learned a lot, met some amazing people and am just thankful for this experience. I have no regrets."

Today's event also served as the final meet for Duncan as well. Duncan will retire from coaching to pursue other endeavors in addition to spending more time with his family. Duncan's decorated career is capped by garnering a total of three gold medals at the 2014 Big Sky Outdoor Championships, advancing seven to the NCAA West Prelim and one to the NCAA Final.

"It's been a great journey and I've been blessed to be apart of this program," said Duncan. "I think it is one of the greatest endeavors to be with teenagers as they blossom into adulthood. They learn a lot of things while they are in college and it is just a dynamic time to be apart of someone's life."

The Lumberjacks will be back in action tomorrow, as Caleb Hoover will compete in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
