All-American Performance by NAU T&F's Hoover
/ June 14, 2014
EUGENE, Ore. – Northern Arizona University's track & field team completed competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship Final. Caleb Hoover wrapped up his junior campaign with an incredible performance in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
Hoover is the lone Lumberjack to walk away with All-American status following this week's events. The junior finished seventh in the men's 3000m steeplechase after running a lifetime-best 8:43.99 to get a spot on the podium.
"The race went out pretty fast as I expected so I just sat in the back and waited to kick in the last 150 meters," said Hoover. "I couldn't have asked for a better outcome for this week. I didn't event expect to make the finals so to get All-American has been a lot of fun."
The Missouri-native was patient throughout the race sitting comfortably between 11th and ninth place. With 150 meters remaining in the race Hoover made his move, going from ninth to seventh place during that time. Hoover's performance garnered the Lumberjacks their first points of the meet.
"Caleb ran the type of race we thought would put him in a position to score," said director of track & field and cross country Eric Heins. "He didn't run too fast early on or get caught up running wide. He did everything he needed to do and was able to pass two guys at the end."
Hoover's performance was the highlight of the week for the Lumberjacks. NAU had a total of three athletes - Hoover, Deante Kemper and Lauren Stuart - compete at the NCAA Final to conclude the season.
"It's really challenging to get to this meet," said Heins. "To walk away with points on the board on the men's side is an accomplishment. Even though Deante didn't score he was here supporting and Lauren ended her career with the highest national finish she has ever had, so that's all you can ask for."
