STE-THERESE, Quebec – Northern Arizona freshman Ashley Taylor became the second Lumberjack to qualify for the IAAF World Championships, after a solid performance at the Canadian Junior Track & Field Championships this weekend.
"I'm really excited about making the team for the world championships. I'm proud to be able to be able to represent NAU and Team Canada. I look forward to racing at the world level and seeing what I can to build on my experience from NAU. I would like to thank Coach McDaniel and Coach Heins for supporting me through my freshman year and into the summer for Canadian track. My parents have also been my number one supporters."
Taylor, the 2014 Big Sky Outdoor Champion in the 400-meter hurdles, put her talents to the test at the Canadian Junior Championships. She entered the finals with the second fastest time in the prelims at 59.79. Taylor was able to improve her time in the finals as she was clocked at 59.44 to garner a second place finish.
"Ashley had a miraculous freshman season," said assistant coach Kenny McDaniel. "One of Ashley's main goals during the recruiting process was for her to make the Canadian Junior Team, and I'm very proud of her."
The 2014 IAAF World Junior Championships will be held in Eugene, Ore. from July 22-27, 2014 at Hayward Field at TrackTown USA. Taylor will join fellow NAU teammate Brooke Andersen who qualified for Team USA in the hammer throw.
Note: Senior Lauren Stuart competed at the Canadian Senior Track & Field Championships in the hammer throw. Stuart captured a career-best mark of 65.05 meters on her last and final throw to place second.
