FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Before starting a three-game homestand over the next two weeks, the Northern Arizona women's basketball team will make a quick road trip to face Denver on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Lumberjacks will be seeking their first three-game winning streak since 2015.
"It seems like we've been on the road a lot, but we're getting more comfortable in preparing a young team to go on the road and perform the way they're capable of," said head coach Loree Payne. "It'll be good to face a really good Denver team that will challenge us in every way. I think we match up really well with them, and I think it'll be a great game."
NAU has won its last two games to move to 2-3 overall. Most recently, the Lumberjacks dominated Antelope Valley on Monday, 104-49, in Tuba City. Six players scored in double-digits in the victory led by 16 each from redshirt senior Kenna McDavis and junior Kaleigh Paplow, who will be returning home to Denver this weekend.
Redshirt senior Olivia Lucero is tied for third in the Big Sky with 19.2 points per game, while also ranking second in the conference with 5.0 assists per game. McDavis and Paplow are averaging 17.4 points and 15.4 points per game respectively, and were two of three players to record double-doubles on versus Antelope Valley along with freshman Khiarica Rasheed. Rasheed posted season-bests of 13 points and 13 rebounds off the bench.
NAU defeated Denver last season in the Walkup Skydome, 82-67, which snapped a two-game skid in the all-time series to the Pioneers.
A video stream of Sunday's contest will be available at this link, but a subscription fee is required.
Tuba City: By the Numbers: NAU's victory over Antelope Valley was an eye-opener, but the numbers go beyond the scoreboard. The 55-point margin of victory is the third-largest in school history only trailing NAU's 101-29 victory over Sacramento State on Jan. 19, 2002 and a 95-37 victory over Cal State Northridge on Dec. 2, 1995. The 104 points was the second-highest total in school history. NAU scored a school record 109 points in last season's victory over Antelope Valley. Six players - McDavis (16), Paplow (16), Lucero (14), Rasheed (13), junior Tate Tsingine (10) and freshman Lauren Orndoff (10) - scored in double-figures. All 11 players who appeared in the game got in the scoring column. McDavis, Paplow and Rasheed all totaled double-doubles. Redshirt freshman Brianna Lehew joined the three players with double-digit rebounds. NAU outrebounded Antelope Valley, 70-35, with the 70 rebounds marking the third-most in a game in school history and most since 1982.
The Big 3: Lucero (19.2), McDavis (17.4) and Paplow (15.4) gives NAU three players averaging at least 15 points per game. The Lumberjacks, along with Idaho, are one of two teams in the league to boast three 15-point scorers.
