SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Northern Arizona track & field program had a number of standout performances this past weekend at the USATF Outdoor Championships led by Lopez Lomong's fifth-place finish in the 5,000m race.
Lomong, a 2013 NAU Athletics Hall of Fame inductee and two-time Olympian, turned in a 5,000m time of 13:21.74 to record the highest finish among the Lumberjack contingent – past and present – during the four-day meet at Sacramento State's Hornet Stadium. Diego Estrada, a fellow Olympian, recorded the next best finish of sixth in the 10,000m with a time of 29:08.14.
While two of NAU's most distinguished alums shined the brightest, a trio of current Lumberjack student-athletes posted impressive showings.
Tyler Day and
Andy Trouard, members of NAU's 2016 NCAA National Championship cross country team, showcased their talents in the distance events. Day placed ninth in the 10,000m with a time of 29:22.66, coming in a few places after Estrada, while Trouard raced to a time of 13:49.19 to place 11th in the 5,000m. Trouard also placed 32nd in the 1,500m run.
Meanwhile,
Brooke Andersen was just as advertised in the women's hammer throw. Fresh off her national runner-up finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, Andersen launched a best throw of 216-3 (65.91m) on her second attempt which landed her in 10th overall and just two spots out of qualifying for the finals.
Also competing were several former 'Jacks from NAU's storied cross country and track & field programs. With the fifth-fastest qualifying time of 8:32.94, Brian Shrader advanced to the 3,000m steeplechase final. Although his finals time of 8:39.33 dropped him to 11th overall, Shrader was the lead Lumberjack in the steeplechase that also featured
Caleb Hoover. Hoover placed 19th with a time of 8:43.48.
Futsum Zienasellassie, NAU's reigning Male Athlete of the Year, clocked a time of 29:37.64 in the 10,000m run while Rochelle Kanuho placed 20th in the women's 5,000m with a time of 16:16.26.
