FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's soccer team picked up their third win of the season over Detroit Mercy in what was their first matchup in program history. The Lumberjacks scored late again to win 1-0 for the second weekend in a row. Head Coach
Andre Luciano and the Lumberjacks are now 3-1 on the season and will continue the Mountain Classic Sunday against Nevada.
"We took 21 shots and only allowed 6 which is something we want to strive for being a team that is great defensively," said Luciano. "Score one or two and then grind out the rest of the game and our backline has done a fantastic job."
Northern Arizona came out strong with more than eight shots in the first half, one of which was a close breakaway by senior forward
Anna Goebel, who had three total shots. The Titans struggled covering the 'Jacks and allowed NAU to take advantage of the width and create those close chances.
The Lumberjacks went into the half scoreless against Detroit Mercy and scored 10 minutes in with a double assist from
Tatum Heeres and
Adrian Nixt. Much like against Grand Canyon last week, the 'Jacks capitalized on a cross across the center of the goal, tonight junior
Madeline Waszak recorded the game-winning goal.
"At half we came out all wanting to score," Waszak said. "We were crisp in our offensive attack and we had a purpose — once I saw the opportunity I hit it."
The Lumberjacks have had five different athletes score in blue and gold so far this season with hopes to continue working on capitalizing on their chances.
Northern Arizona will return on the pitch Sunday against the Nevada Wolf Pack at 1 p.m.
