FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's soccer team solidified a perfect weekend at home as the hosts of the 2017 Mountain Classic after a 1-0 win over Nevada. The Lumberjacks put forth a team effort to overcome the Wolf Pack Sunday afternoon outshooting them 12-3. Head Coach
Andre Luciano and the Lumberjacks, now 4-1 on the season, are finding a consistent stride as they move closer to conference play.
"This was a good test for us and we were forced to problem solve, which is good for us to do early in the season" said Luciano. "We had a great early goal in the first 50 seconds, which is sometimes difficult to maintain momentum, but we have to give Nevada a lot of credit they fought hard and put in a lot of numbers in behind us."
In the first minute of the game, Northern Arizona had an eight-pass combination leading to the first and only goal of the game. Junior
Madeline Waszak recorded her second goal of the weekend off of a double assist from senior
Adrian Nixt and sophomore
Malia Lyken — two forwards who have combined for 10 shots and four assists.
"Our team has so much depth and for Sunday games it is really easy for us to bring the high energy," Waszak said. "When we enter the game, the level never goes down because we have a talented team who works hard for each other on and off the field."
Defensively, senior goalkeeper
Meghan Dickmann did not record a single save as her backline held Nevada to just three total shots, none in the second half. With various players stepping up offensively for the 'Jacks, Luciano has a strong roster moving into next weekend and the rest of season.
"Our job is to get better every single day and if we do that we will be okay until the end of the season — the results will come," Luciano said.
The Lumberjacks will have Monday off before getting back on the field in preparation for another weekend at home. The 'Jacks will host the UNLV Rebels Sept. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and the Pacific Tigers Sept. 10 at 5 p.m.
