TEMPE, Ariz. – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team fell in their season opener against No. 24 Arizona State with a final score of 7-0. The Lumberjacks competed against a stacked Sun Devil roster comprised of two nationally ranked singles individuals and three nationally ranked doubles pairs.
 

"Playing nationally ranked teams is always a challenge, but we need these high-level matches in order to be ready for the Big Sky Conference tournament," said head coach Maciej Bogusz.
 

Northern Arizona's No. 53 doubles pair Chiara Tomasetti and Hanneke Lodewijks picked up an impressive 6-2 doubles win over ASU's No. 28 Savannah Slaysman and Tereza Kolarova.
 

After the Lumberjacks fell in doubles, they went on to singles falling 6-0 with Tomasetti taking Sun Devil Lauryn John-Baptiste to three sets.
 

For Bogusz, the Lumberjacks fared well in their first spring competition as a team.  
 

"We have definitely established a good base in the fall and plan to continue building on it," Bogusz said.
 

Northern Arizona will return to Flagstaff with a week of practice before heading south again to take on University of Arizona on Saturday, Jan. 27 in Tucson, Ariz. The match against the Wildcats is set to begin at 9 a.m. MST.
