NAU Swimming Offering Free Swim Lessons to Flagstaff Community

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 9, 2018) – The Northern Arizona swimmers conducted their first of four free swim lessons this past Saturday at Mount Elden Middle School (MEMS), picking up on the series of lessons they started last spring.

About 20 Flagstaff youth attended with a dozen of NAU's student-athletes providing the instruction this past Saturday. Last year, NAU held four similar lessons last April.

"It was great to be back here at MEMS and we want to thank FUSD (Flagstaff Unified School District) for helping us out with the pool rental," said NAU volunteer swimming coach Liz Hobbs. "The kids had a great time. We had a bunch of NAU swimmers here helping them to swim and there were big smiles from both the swimmers and instructors. We're looking forward continuing this program throughout the year."

The next three lessons will be held every other Saturday at MEMS from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on April 21, May 5 and May 19. All lessons are completely free of charge and are open to not only kids, but all ages as young as three years old. The Lumberjack student-athletes will continue to provide instruction, as will local volunteers from throughout the Flagstaff community.

Interested participants must reserve a spot at least 24 hours before the day of their intended lesson to Liz Hobbs at coachlizhobbs@gmail.com. All sessions will include instruction and supervised free swim time. Walk-in students will be allowed to participate on a given date if possible.
