Flagstaff, Ariz. (August 31, 2018) – Northern Arizona women's soccer ended the match in a 0-0 tie against Army although NAU outshot Army 19 to 7 on the night. This is the third straight overtime match that the 'Jacks have had in the past week.
The Lumberjacks with this tie now move to 3-1-1 on the season. While Army will move to 3-1-2 on the year.
"I am proud of my team, we played hard," NAU head coach
Andre Luciano said. "We created 19 shot and only gave up seven. What else could I ask?"
Northern Arizona was able to come out strong as it put up six shots in the first half, compared to the Black Knights two. An offside call against the Lumberjacks, stopped what would have been a potential goal by
Tatum Heeres.
The 'Jacks continued their aggressive play in the second half, as they were able to put up 10 shots. The Black Knights' goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia came up big for her team as she collected six saves in the half.
Heeres and Coco were able to apply the most pressure for the Lumberjacks' offense, as they collectively had five shots on goal.
"I was really proud with how we played," Heeres said. "They had a very organized defense and we tried to exploit them. We just need to finish in the final third and then we can be really dangerous."
Northern Arizona's defense had another dominant performance, as it posted its third shutout of the year. As well as another game with less than 10 shots given up. Amanda Bennet was an enforcer on the 'Jacks backline as well, she was all over the field tonight making play after play.
"They had many different styles of play throughout the game," Bennet said. "They came out in a 4-3-3, and switched to two in the front and five in the back during the game. I think that we did a really good job at adapting well, but now it's just about how quick we can do it. We see it, but we have to see it faster and figure out a way to penetrate it."
Northern Arizona will be hosting two games next weekend, starting with UNLV on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. MST and CSU Bakersfield on Sunday Sept. 9 at 1 p.m. MST.
