FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 23, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's Swimming and Diving team will be making the trip to Boise, Idaho to take on Boise State in a two-day meet this Friday and Saturday, Jan. 25-26.
"I think we're in a good spot, as we have been working hard and we are starting to come around," NAU head coach
Andy Johns. "Boise State is great competition and an outstanding team. This meet will help our team get ready for the conference meet as we will be seeing fast swimmers."
The Lumberjacks are currently 4-3 on the season while being 2-0 in the conference. NAU's last time out was in a dual meet against Kansas and Northern Colorado on Jan. 11. Northern Arizona was able to pick up a win against UNC by a score of 172-117 while falling to KU by a score of 197-101.
In the dual meet, the Lumberjacks were able to pick up three outright wins in the pool while also picking up two top-three finishes in both diving events.
In swimming, the three victories came in the 200 butterfly (
Andrea Schmidt), 50 freestyle (
Elisa Rodriguez) and 200 Individual Medley (
Niamh McDonagh).
On the boards, the senior duo of
Tatiana Kurach and
Christina Torrente put on a show in the Aquatic Center for the dual meet with both placing in the top three in the 1-meter and the 3-meter events. Kurach placed second in both events as she trailed Xu Vicky of Kansas, while Torrente placed third in both.
Following the dual meet, the diving team traveled to Los Angeles, Calif. to participate in the UCLA Diving Invite last weekend. The invite was stretched out over a span of three days with the Lumberjacks competing in each of the three diving events.
Sophomore
Jenny Cheetham was the top diver for Northern Arizona in the UCLA Diving Invite as she was the highest placed 'Jack in the 1-meter and the 3-meter. In the 1-meter, Cheetham placed eighth overall while in the 3-meter she placed 13th.
The Lumberjacks' top finisher in the platform was senior
Olivia Payne, who placed 16th overall with a season-high score of 201.05.
Matchup
Boise State's Swimming and Diving team is coming into the meet with a record of 7-3. The Broncos are currently heading into the meet riding a two-meet win streak, with the wins coming over Nevada and Wyoming.
Between the lanes, Boise State is a well-rounded team with its biggest strength is in the backstroke. In the 100, senior Ally Kleinsorgen is the Broncos' top performer holding the fourth-fastest time in school history. In the 200 backstroke, Boise State's senior Abbey Sorenson is its top performer, as she holds six of the 10 fastest times.
On the boards, the Broncos' top diver is senior Cassidy Bose who currently holds the fifth and seventh top scores on the platform for Boise State. In the 1-meter and 3-meter, Boise State's top diver is freshman Marti Elam.
