Rivera and Montgomery Net Goals in 2-0 Win Over Northern Colorado

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Oct. 13, 2019) – After finding a loss at home on Friday night, Northern Arizona (6-6-2, 2-2-1 Big Sky) women's soccer came back to win its second Big Sky Conference match against the University of Northern Colorado (5-9-3, 3-1-2 Big Sky), owning a 2-0 lead.
 
For the seventh game in a row, Northern Arizona has outshot their opponents. Against the Bears today, the Lumberjacks took 15 shots with seven on-goal. UNC took half of the amount of shots at eight with three on-goal.
 
Kayla Terhune led the 'Jacks in shots today, taking three. Following closely behind were Sam Larberg and Ana Rivera, both with two shots and one on-goal. Mei-Te Coco, Rylee Mitchell, Amanda Bennett, and Carly George all had one shot, one on-goal. Whitney Winans, Lexy Aguilar and Kylie Kapustka each recorded one single shot. 
 
At the 18th minute of the game Rivera scored her first season goal. Rivera stole the ball off of a defender outside of the box and found an opening. From there, Rivera took a shot, sending the ball over the goalkeeper's head into the top left corner. Last year, she led the 'Jacks in goals at three, assists at two and had a perfect shot-on-goal record. 
 
Madison Montgomery now leads NAU for the most goals at six. She recorded her sixth goal today at the 68th minute off of a penalty kick.
 
Taylor Fu made her debut as a Northern Arizona Lumberjack during today's match. In her seven minutes of play, she almost recorded an assist for a header Terhune took, just to be saved by UNC's goalkeeper.
 
Taryn Benham succeeded in her fifth shutout. In the Big Sky, Northern Arizona is currently tied for second in shutouts. Benham also made three saves today to bring her total to 44.
 
NAU leads the Big Sky Conference in amount of shots with 200. Eastern Washington trails behind at 182. The Lumberjacks are also tied for second in the Big Sky with Eastern Washington for amount of goals at 17.
 
The Big Sky play for the Lumberjacks will continue this upcoming weekend with two away games at Idaho (3-10-2, 0-3-2 Big Sky) this Friday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. and again on Sunday, Oct. 20 against Eastern Washington (6-5-2, 3-0-1 Big Sky) at 12 p.m.
