Akin Swings Her Way to Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week Honors

FARMINGTON, Utah (October 28, 2019) – Senior Abby Akin was honored as the Big Sky's Offensive Player of the Week on Monday following the Northern Arizona volleyball team's 2-0 week with victories against Southern Utah and Northern Colorado last week. She averaged 3.14 kills per set on .526 combined hitting and also added four service aces in the two wins.

The award is Akin's third this season, to go with two Defensive Player of the Week honors previously. Akin is also the only player in the league to be tabbed both the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week this season. For her career, she now has eight career weekly awards.

Akin totaled 22 kills, with just two errors, and hit .500 or better in both matches against the Thunderbirds and Bears. She began the week with 13 kills and attacked a .545 clip in the four-set win over Southern Utah last Monday. She compiled six kills on six swings, including on match point, in the clinching fourth set.

Following NAU's road win in Cedar City, the 'Jacks swept Northern Colorado last Thursday at home – ending Northern Colorado's eight-match win streak and handing the Bears their first conference loss of the season. Akin posted nine kills on .500 hitting to spur the Lumberjacks to their first sweep of the Bears since 2007.

Akin also recorded three of her four aces for the week versus Northern Colorado and tallied her second kill on match point in as many matches.

Akin continues to pace the league in hitting percentage at .418 and she has recorded eight double-digit kill matches in her last nine. She is averaging a career-high 2.74 kills per set overall, including 3.05 kills per set in conference play.

NAU is on the road this week at Idaho State on Thursday and Weber State on Saturday with both matches starting at 6 p.m. MST.
