Both the men's and women's squads were the preseason favorites to take home conference championship bragging rights this season in the Big Sky Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Lumberjack men enter the weekend ranked No. 1 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I Men's National Coaches' Poll for the 27th consecutive week. NAU also holds the record for the lowest team score in conference history at 15, which the Lumberjacks set back in 1988 and repeated in 2016. Northern Arizona has also won the last three individual titles at the event, with a total of 27 all-time.
Southern Utah is the only team other than the Lumberjacks to win the men's crown in the last 12 years is currently ranked No. 19 in the nation and fourth in the mountain region. Weber State, Montana State, Idaho State, Northern Colorado, and Idaho are ranked in the mountain and west region polls.
The Lumberjack women will be back with something to prove this season as Southern Utah took the title last season. The Southern Utah women won the championship in 2018 for the first time in school history. The Thunderbirds, along with Northern Arizona, Weber State and Montana are all ranked in the latest USTFCCCA Mountain Region polls.
NAU's women won the Big Sky title in 2016 and 2017. The 'Jacks lead the conference with 20 team titles all-time, to go along with 16 individual titles. With a mixture of veterans and newcomers, the Lumberjacks have been able to climb up the polls and position themselves among the best in the nation.
