NAU Women’s Tennis Battles Memphis in 4-2 Loss in Tucson

TUCSON, Ariz. (February 1, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team received singles wins from junior Chiara Tomasetti and freshman Adrianna Sosnowska, but the Lumberjacks were edged by Memphis, 4-2. NAU is now 1-2 in the dual matches this spring following Friday's defeat at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
 
Tomasetti and Sosnowska both notched their second singles wins of the spring at No. 1 and No. 5 respectively, helping the 'Jacks nearly come back to best the Tigers after dropping the doubles point.
 
NAU struck first in doubles play receiving a convincing 6-1 win from senior Eirene Granville and sophomore Madi Moore at the No. 3 spot versus Memphis' Josephine Cao and Claire Sullivan. The Tigers evened the doubles action with a win at No. 1 and then clinched the early match lead with a 6-4 victory at No. 2.
 
Tomasetti flexed her muscle and put the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard in the afternoon's first completed singles match. Tomasetti cruised by Alisha Reayer, 6-1, 6-1, and knotted the match at 1-1.
 
Memphis moved within one point of the overall victory courtesy of wins on the third and sixth courts. NAU responded though with Sosnowska's victory at No. 4 to cut Memphis' lead to 3-2. After a hard earned 7-6 first set win, Sosnowska rolled past Hannah Davies, 6-1, in the second set.
 
The Tigers, who lost 4-1 to Arizona earlier in the day, wrapped up the match with a win at No. 2. Sophomore Ellie Millard put up a fight to try to force a winner-take-all match on the fifth court, but ultimately fell 7-6, 6-4 to Bente.
 
NAU will conclude the weekend Saturday morning versus Arizona. The 'Jacks and Wildcats will get under way at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
