FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (February 8, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's team made quick work of Mesa Community College in the morning and then buckled down for a gritty victory over New Mexico State to complete a perfect home opening doubleheader on Friday. The Lumberjacks evened their season record to 3-3 with 6-1 and 4-2 victories over the Thunderbirds and Aggies respectively.
"It feels great," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "We are fortunate to have a great facility and this is what we're familiar with. They love to play here. Today, I think our home advantage helped us get two wins."
In addition to NAU making its home debut in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex, the Lumberjacks also saw the return of senior
Hanneke Lodewijks, who made her season debut at No. 2 doubles.
Lodewijks paired with sophomore
Ellie Millard for two victories, including a crucial 6-3 win over New Mexico State's Rebecca Keijzerwaard and Lindsay Harlas which clinched the doubles point in the afternoon match.
"It was great to see (Hanneke) back on the court," Bogusz said. "We all missed her. She brings a loud of energy to the team, so we're happy she's back. She stormed through doubles today."
After NAU clinched the doubles point, the 'Jacks fought through singles play to secure their undefeated day on the court. The afternoon match was tied at 1-1 before junior
Chiara Tomasetti and freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska posted dominating singles wins at No. 1 and 3 to increase NAU's lead to 3-1 against New Mexico State.
Tomasetti handed Keijzerwaard a 6-1, 6-2 victory and Sosnowska followed with a win over Yadira Rubio by an identical score. The Aggies closed the gap to 3-2 with a three-set win at No. 2, leaving the Lumberjacks needing a win at No. 4 or 5 to clinch the match.
NAU got the singles victory it needed on the fifth court courtesy of sophomore
Madi Moore, who earned a hard-fought 7-6, 6-3 triumph over Gavi Kalaga.
NAU dispatched New Mexico State after breezing by Mesa Community College to start the day. The 'Jacks shut out the Thunderbirds, 6-0, on all three courts in doubles play. In singles action, NAU won all five singles matches contested with four of them ending in 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Tomasetti (No. 1), Sosnowska (No. 3) and Moore (No. 5) were victorious in both of their singles matches, while two NAU duos (Tomasetti and Sosnowska at No. 1, Lodewijks and Millard at No. 2) were also unbeaten on Friday.
The 'Jacks wrap up their first weekend at home on Sunday, hosting Utah State at 10 a.m. in the Aquatic and Tennis Complex.
