Women’s Tennis Opens Conference with 5-2 Victory Over Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. (March 1, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team breezed through doubles play en route to a conference-opening 5-2 victory over Northern Colorado on Friday. The Lumberjacks won their Big Sky opener for the 10th consecutive year and handed the Bears their first home loss of the season in evening their overall record to 4-4.

"We came out ready to play today," said head coach Ewa Bogusz. "We had a really good warm-up and were able to carry the momentum for a while. The ladies are recognizing what we still need to work on and we can't wait to get on the court again on Sunday."

To open their weekend road trip, the 'Jacks improved their regular season conference win streak to 32 matches. Northern Colorado had won its first three matches at home this spring, but NAU set the tone in doubles play to open the afternoon's action in the Work-Out West Tennis Indoor Courts.

Freshman Emilie Haakansson and sophomore Madi Moore posted a 6-0 shutout win at No. 3 before junior Chiara Tomasetti and freshman Adrianna Sosnowska clinched the doubles point shortly after with a 6-2 victory at No. 1. Senior Hanneke Lodewijks and sophomore Ellie Millard completed the doubles sweep at No. 2, winning 6-2.

Northern Colorado won at No. 2 singles to tie the match at 1-1 before NAU responded with four straight wins to secure the victory. Tomasetti put the 'Jacks ahead on the scoreboard with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 over Anna Battersby, and Sosnowska recorded an identical victory at No. 4 against Madeline Doherty.

The Lumberjacks got the clinching victory from Haakansson at No. 5, where she blanked Sarina Chhabra, 6-0, 6-0. Haakansson's win allowed the Lumberjacks to beat the Bears for the 16th straight time in program history.

After NAU clinched the team win, the two teams split the final two matches at No. 3 and 6. Millard posted the Lumberjacks' fourth and final singles win on the third court, working for a three-set victory over Sandra Keta, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Northern Colorado wrapped up the day with its own three-set win at the No. 6 spot.

NAU concludes its road trip at Wyoming on Sunday at 2 p.m.
