FRESNO, Calif. (March 15, 2019) – The Northern Arizona women's tennis team nearly battled back from getting swept in doubles play, but ultimately the Lumberjacks suffered a second consecutive 4-3 loss Friday evening to Fresno State. The Bulldogs' victory at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center lowered the Lumberjacks' record to 4-7.
"We fought hard today," said head coach
Ewa Bogusz. "Coming down to sea-level courts and playing tight with a top Mountain West team takes hard work, and we worked today. We will use it as preparation for our next match."
NAU slipped in doubles play with Fresno State notching wins on all three courts to seize the 1-0 lead in the match. Senior

Ellie Millard competed at the No. 1 position for the first time this season, but fell 6-2 in the first completed match. The Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 3 before wrapping up with a 6-2 win at No. 2.
Millard tied up the scoreboard at 1-1 by defeating Ella Husrefovic, 6-1, 6-3, and notching her third singles dual win of the season. Fresno State promptly moved back ahead with a win at No. 4 singles.
The 'Jacks pulled even once again with the result on the third court where freshman
Adrianna Sosnowska collected a convincing straight-set win over Deniza Marcinkevica. Sosnowska knocked off her Bulldog counterpart, 6-3, 6-4, and tied the score at 2-2 before junior
Chiara Tomasetti put the Lumberjacks ahead with her win at No. 1 versus Jennifer Timotin.
The No. 108 ranked played in the country improved to 10-0 in dual matches with a 6-0, 1-6, 6-2 victory giving NAU wins at the top three singles spots.
That left NAU needing to win one of the two matches of the evening at the bottom two positions where sophomore
Madi Moore and junior
Sydney Roman were competing to successfully overcome its doubles deficit. Roman fell at No. 6 to Georgia Lawson, 6-1, 6-4, which allowed Fresno State to tie the score at 3-3.
With the match tied, Fresno State's A.C. Hummel rallied for her team to deny NAU of its first-ever win over the Bulldogs. Moore took the first set at No. 5 versus Hummel, 6-4, but Hummel proceeded to claim the final two sets by scores of 6-4, 6-1.
NAU will try to put an end to its three-match losing streak Monday morning at Sacramento State. The Lumberjacks will meet the Hornets in their second Big Sky match of the spring at 11 a.m.
