FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (March 25, 2019) – With National Athletic Training Month winding to a close, one of Northern Arizona University's athletic trainers received a prestigious honor recently.
Naomi Eastland, a first-year Sports Medicine Graduate Assistant, was the recipient of the David H. Perrin Scholarship from the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) earlier this month.
"Naomi has shown in her journey to NAU that she embraces adversity, but never lets it define her," said Director of Sports Medicine
Cherisse Kutyreff. "The David H. Perrin Scholarship is a prestigious award from the National Athletic Trainers' Association Foundation Ethnic Diversity Council. This honor is a testament to her character, poise and leadership."
NATA awards the David H. Perrin Scholarship to the top ranked ethnically diverse student pursuing a master's degree among all qualified candidates who meet the eligibility requirements. Candidates must be a certified athletic trainer who is a member of NATA while gaining acceptance into an entry-level master's level or Doctoral level program and achieving a bachelor's degree with a 3.2 minimum cumulative GPA.
Eastland, a native of Everett, Wash., is finishing up her first year at NAU and works with the Lumberjack track & field program. Pursing her master's degree in Educational Leadership, Eastland's medical assistance was a big part in the Lumberjack men claiming the 2019 Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championship last month.
Eastland joined the NAU Sports Medicine team after earning her bachelor's degree in athletic training from Eastern Washington. She is a member of NATA and is an avid supporter of community service efforts and has served on behalf of organizations such as Relay for Life, Operation Christmas Child, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Step It Up Camps during her time in her home state of Washington.
