DAVIS, Calif. (March 29, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team completed a 4-3 comeback win against the University of California Davis on March 29 in Davis, Calif. The road victory marks the eighth straight win for the Lumberjacks, with the streak starting on March 2 against Southern Utah. The win moves NAU to a record of 11-6 on the season, and the 'Jacks remain 6-0 in the Big Sky, while the loss moves UC Davis to 9-6 on the season.
"What a great match to prepare us for conference play tomorrow," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "We lost a very close doubles point, but the team did an excellent job moving on and bounced right back. It was a team victory, and every single player contributed to the overall victory."
The Lumberjacks for the first time in eight matches fell behind 1-0 as the team lost the doubles point. Northern Arizona's lone doubles team to win its match was the No. 1 pair of
Tim Handel and
Ruben Montano, who beat David Goulak and Daniel Landana of UCD 6-4. Both NAU's No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams lost their matches.
In singles, the 'Jacks were able to win four of the six matchups on the day.
NAU was able to tie the score at 1-1 when Montano won the No. 6 singles match 6-1 and 6-1 over Alex Scemanenco. Following the Lumberjack point, UC Davis was able to regain its lead as it took the No. 5 singles match. Luckily for Northern Arizona, Handel was able to win the No. 1 singles match over Goulak 6-4 and 6-2. This victory marks the senior's conference-leading 14th win of the season. The 'Jacks were able to continue their momentum in the match as
Facundo Tumosa won the No. 3 singles against UCD's Chethan Swanson 7-6 and 7-6.
With just being one point away from a victory, NAU fell in the No. 4 singles to cause a must win in the No. 2 singles match. Fortunately for the 'Jacks
Lucas Taylor came up big for the team as he won his match 6-3, 4-6 and 6-2 to seal the win.
