Box Score SACRAMENTO, Calif. (March 31, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team won its ninth straight match of the season and completed an undefeated March after taking down Sacramento State 4-3 on March 30. In the match, the Lumberjacks fell down early 1-3 before completing the 4-3 comeback.
The win moves NAU to a record of 12-6 on the season and 7-0 in the Big Sky. The 7-0 start in the conference has already clinched a spot in the Big Sky tournament at the end of the season. The loss moves the Hornets to 5-10 on the season and 3-2 in the Big Sky.
For the second straight match, Northern Arizona went down 0-1 after losing the doubles points. The Lumberjacks lost both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles on the day. The No. 3 doubles remained unfinished.
Unfortunately for NAU, they lost the No. 2 singles match to go down 0-2.
The 'Jacks were able to pick up their first point of the match when
Tom Fisher was able to win the No. 6 singles against Donald Hall 6-0 and 6-1.
After losing the No. 4 singles match, and going down 1-3 and being one point away from a loss the Lumberjacks were able to win their last three singles matches. The first 'Jack to win their match was
Ruben Montano at the No. position. Montano took down Louis Chabut 7-5 and 6-1. Following Montano's win, the freshman
Facundo Tumosa won the No. 3 singles match 6-3 and 7-6 against Sacramento State's Dom Miller. The match would eventually come down to NAU's most consistent player so far this season
Tim Handel at the No. 1 position. The senior came through for Northern Arizona as he beat Mikus Losbergs 6-3, 4-6 and 6-3 to seal the NAU win.
"Our team has shown big heart and character today, being down 1:3 and coming back to win final three singles matches," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "It is not an easy thing to do especially on the road and back to back days. I am proud of the resilience we showed this weekend."
Looking Forward
Northern Arizona will be back at home next week to begin its seven-match home stint. The Lumberjacks will kick it off on Wednesday, March 31 against the University of Delaware.
