FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (April 14, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team was able to go 2-0 against Western New Mexico on April 14 to extend the winning streak to 16 matches. The Lumberjacks were able to win the first match 6-1 and the second match 4-0. Before the second match of the day, NAU honored its five seniors for senior day.
"Congratulations to the team and especially to our seniors on their last home victories," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "They have done so much for this program, and I feel privileged that I get to work with them.
With the two home wins, the 'Jacks remain undefeated at home, with a record of 19-6 on the season, while the team is 10-0 in the Big Sky. With the two losses, Western New Mexico moves to 5-12 on the season.
"We have a couple of weeks of the season left, and there is still some work that needs to be done, the team needs to stay focused," Bogusz said.
Match 1
The Lumberjacks were able to come out strong as the team won all three of their doubles matches. The first tandem to win their match was the No. 2 doubles pair of
Ron Idzon and
Daniel Dillon. The freshman pair was able to win their match by a score of 6-1. Following the No.2 doubles win, the No. 1 pair of
Chris Steele and
Tom Fisher were able to win their match 6-3 to clinch the point.
Lucas Taylor and
Justin Bac were able to win the final doubles match 6-4. This win marked the first of Bac's career.
Northern Arizona's dominance continued into singles as the team won five of the six matches. Taylor's match finished first at the No. 1 position as WNMU's No. 1 singles player disqualified due to an injury mid-match. With a 2-0 lead,
David Nguyen was able to win the No. 5 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-0 to push the lead to 3-0. NAU's Steele was able to seal the win for the team as he beat Western New Mexico's No. 2 singles player 6-2, 6-0.
In the final three matches for the 'Jacks, the team was able to win the No. 4 and No. 3, while losing the No. 6. NAU's Dillon was able to win the No. 4 singles by a score of 6-4. 6-0, while Fisher finished off the match with a 6-3, 7-6 victory at the No. 3 position.
Match 2
Due to an injury in the first match of the day, Western New Mexico entered the second match with only five players forcing the team to automatically lose the No. 3 doubles and No 6 singles. NAU was able to capitalize on the early 1-0 lead by expanding it to 2-0 after winning the doubles point. With only needing to win one of the doubles matches to seal the point, NAU's No.1 pair of Steele and Fisher were able to clinch the point for the team as they took down Western New Mexico's Oscar Serra and Joel Ockemahl 6-2.
With a 2-0 lead, the Lumberjacks were able to win the first two singles to seal their 16th straight victory. Idzon was able to win the No. 3 singles over Nico Barr 6-2, 6-2, while Nguyen was able to win the No 4 singles 7-5, 6-0.
