IRVINE, Calif. (April 18, 2019) – The Northern Arizona men's tennis team finished off its regular season with a 4-3 victory over the University of California Irvine. The Lumberjacks win was able to keep the winning streak alive at 17 matches.
"The team showed lots of character once again; we were able to come back and win the doubles point after being down a break and made another come back after a poor start in singles on most of the courts," NAU head coach
Maciej Bogusz said. "Special congrats to our leader Tom who found the way and clinched the match for us."
With the win in the match, the 'Jacks move to 20-6 on the season, while they are a perfect 10-0 in the Big Sky. The ten wins helped seal the regular season Big Sky Championship. The loss moves the UCI to a record of 13-7.
The Lumberjacks were able to start the match by taking the doubles point over the Anteaters by winning the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches. Northern Arizona started the doubles matches off by falling in the No. 1 doubles match. NAU's No. 2 tandem of
Chris Steele and
Tom Fisher were able to take down the Anteaters No. 2 pair 6-4. The 'Jacks No. 3 pair of
Lucas Taylor and
Ruben Montano were able to seal the win in the must-win No, 3 doubles match by a score of 6-3.
The 'Jacks wound up falling in the first two singles matches to fall 1-2 in the match before coming back to win the No. 1, and No. 3 singles match to take a 3-2 lead. NAU's most reliable player
Tim Handel was able to win the No. 1 singles match by a score of 6-2, 7-6, Tumosa won the No. 3 match by a score of 7-6, 7-5.
With just being one point away, the Lumberjacks lost the No. 2 singles match to cause a must win at the No. 6 position. After taking the first set 6-4, and falling in the second set 3-6, Fisher was able to win the match by taking the final set 7-6.
Looking Forward
Northern Arizona will be back in action next weekend as the team will participate in the Big Sky Championship down in Phoenix, Ariz.
