FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (July 24, 2019) - Fresh off of a third straight NCAA Men's Division I Cross Country national championship, both Northern Arizona squads look to race against some of the country's best this fall after releasing the 2019 schedule.
NAU will be racing in three meets during the regular season before post-season competition. The Lumberjacks will be starting the season off in their own backyard with the running of the 39th annual George Kyte Classic at Buffalo Park in Flagstaff on Sept. 7th. This meet will be the only chance Lumberjack fans will have to see the complete men's and women's squad race at home this season. Last year the 'Jacks swept the meet with
Peter Lomong and
Hannah Behunin placing first for the men and women, respectively.
Two weeks later NAU will head to Terre Haute, Ind., for the John McNichols Invitational hosted by Indiana State University on Sept. 28th. The home of the Sycamores, The LeVern Gibsoin Course, will also be the site of the 2019 NCAA Cross Country National Championships. Much like the programs strategy in 2017 and 2018, this will give the Lumberjack runners the opportunity to get some valuable experience on the championship course prior to nationals.
The 'Jacks will look to defend their first-place team finish from last season at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational on Oct. 18th in Madison, Wis.
Tyler Day led the way for NAU last year coming in third-place at the meet, with three other male Lumberjack runners finishing in the top-10 for a total team score of 46 points. NAU will be competing for its fifth men's team victory in seven years at Nuttycombe this fall.
This year's Big Sky Conference Championships will take place in Greeley, Colo., on Nov. 2nd and will hosted by Northern Colorado University. The Lumberjack men captured their third straight conference title in 2018, while the NAU women's squad saw
Jesselyn Bries named as Female Freshman of the Year.
NCAA Mountain Regionals will follow up the conference championships in Salt Lake City, Utah on Nov. 15th and will be hosted by the University of Utah.
The cross country season will come to an end with the NCAA National Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov 23rd.
