WEST POINT, N.Y. (August 22, 2019) –Sophomore
Madison Montgomery scored the lone goal for the Northern Arizona University women's soccer team as it posted a 1-1 tie at Army on Thursday in a match that went to double overtime.
The game marked the season opener for both teams and sends the Lumberjacks' record to 0-0-1. This marked the second straight season that NAU has squared off against Army – with last year's matchup also ending in a draw.
Montgomery got the Lumberjacks on the scoreboard in the 9
thminute when she knocked home a goal off a rebound opportunity on a previous shot attempt.
Sam Larberg assisted on the score, which gave NAU an early 1-0 advantage.
The goal marked the second straight match with a score for Montgomery who also tallied a score against Grand Canyon University in an exhibition match last week.
Army was able to even the ledger when Erynn Johns snuck a goal past Benham in the 79
thminute. Lauren Drysdale assisted on the goal for the Black Knights.
Benham made a key save, one of eight overall in the game, in the first overtime after Army's Trinity Garay fired her second shot on goal of the night. The eight saves tied a career best for Benham, matching her performance vs. Arizona State on Sept. 14, 2018.
Larberg led the 'Jacks in shots with four. NAU finished the match with nine shot attempts, five of which were on goal.
"I think we faced some adversity today," Head coach Kylie Louw said. "Just what we wanted as coaches, I think the team responded appropriately. We started off strong and scored an early goal. Army is a great team and credit to them put us under pressure the second half to pull back a goal. Both teams had excellent chances. For us, a great benchmark and now we can go back to the drawing board and grow, evolve and improve. Rest, recover and battle on Sunday. Looking forward to facing another opportunity. Proud of these young ladies."
The Lumberjacks will return to action on Sunday, August 25 for their final match of a two-game road swing in the Empire State when they battle Iona College in a 9 a.m. MST start.
