NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (August 25, 2019) – Northern Arizona University's soccer team recorded its first win of the regular season at Iona College on Sunday posting a 2-0 shutout.
"The team showed great character today," NAU head coach
Kylie Louw said. "I am proud of their response to some challenges I put on them and am excited about their energy and willingness to adjust and committing to finding a way to contribute and score goals."
For the third game in a row, sophomore
Madison Montgomery scored for the Blue and Gold. Last match, Montgomery was the sole scorer for the team, helping to tie against Army 1-1.
Kayla Terhune saw an opportunity to go long, passing it to Montgomery who sent the ball into the top-right corner of the goal.
Paige Maling secured the win for NAU after scoring at the 64
thminute of the game.
Ana Rivera passed it short to Maling where she chipped it over the goalkeeper straight to the middle of the goal.
The defense played well against the Gaels, only allowing three shots, none being on-goal.
Taryn Benham also acquired her first shutout of the season. Last year, she recorded a personal best of 10 shutouts, tying for first in the Big Sky Conference.
NAU took a total of 22 shots with 10 being on-goal. Iona's goal keeper, Emma Havrilla, recorded eight saves.
"Credit to an organized Iona who made it very difficult for us to penetrate and get any clear scoring chances," Louw said. "I enjoyed the team first mentality our team showed and ultimately very happy with a great win."
The 'Jacks will be heading home from the Big Apple to compete against Detroit Mercy on Sunday, Sept. 1, starting at 1 p.m. MST at Lumberjack Stadium.
