FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Sept. 1) – After scoring four goals against Detroit Mercy, Northern Arizona University women's soccer team has earned their second win of the season at their home opening game.
The first goal scored by NAU was after Detroit Mercy fouled, giving the opportunity for a free kick.
Lexy Aguilar, a freshman, hit the ball hard just outside the box, sending it flying into the back of the net at the 18
thminute of the game.
Paige Maling, a junior, dominated on the field with two goals shortly after. At the 25
thminute,
Tatum Heeres crossed the ball to Maling, where she slid it into the left corner of the goal. Just a minute and a half later, she scored again with no assist.
The 'Jacks continued to rack up shots and shots-on-goal during the first half, ending it with 12 shots and
Despite the momentum from the first half, the 'Jacks came out slowly during the second. It wasn't until the 80
thminute of the game when
Kylie Kapustka scored for Northern Arizona. Senior
Amanda Bennett, who typically plays as a defender, ran the ball forward, crossing it over Kapustka, where she was able to slide the ball directly into the center of the net.
Both Heeres and Maling were power forwards for Northern Arizona against the Titans. Both of them took a total of seven shots, Heeres with six on-goal and Maling with five on-goal. Heeres earned an assist from the first goal of the game.
With both a strong offense and defense,
Taryn Benham was able to record her second shutout of the season.
The Lumberjacks will be on the road for the next five consecutive games. For next weekend, they will be traveling to the California coastline to play University of Southern California at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 6. On Sunday, they will be heading up the coast to Stockton, Calif. to challenge the University of the Pacific at 1 p.m.
