FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 12, 2019) -Â Former NAU golfer Megan Buck will be playing in the 33rd Annual U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur at the Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz., from Sept. 14-19. The Lumberjack grad returns to Flagstaff for the U.S. Golf Association tournament after having graduated in 2010.Â
The U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur Championship originated in 1987 as a result of a need to provide a national competitive arena for amateurs age 25 and older. By 1987, it had become increasingly difficult for female amateur golfers beyond college to compete equitably with their collegiate counterparts, for whom golf was nearly a full-time vocation. The inaugural Women's Mid-Amateur attracted 320 entries, only 22 fewer than the number that had entered the 1987 Women's Amateur a few weeks earlier. In 2017, the USGA announced that the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur champion would receive an exemption into the following year's U.S. Women's Open Championship. Kelsey Chugg became the first to achieve the feat with her triumph at Champions Golf Club in Houston.
The Glendale, Ariz., native qualified for the Championship on Aug. 7 at the U.S. Women's Mid-Am Qualifying tournament at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass., after finishing first.
Buck was a multiple Golden Eagle Scholar recipient during her time at NAU and was a Big Sky Conference All-Academic selection in each of her four seasons.
She golfed in 39 tournaments while attending NAU playing a total of 98 rounds averaging a score of 79.15 while shooting for an average of 7.18-over par. Buck won one tournament in her collegiate career. During the 2009-2010 season Buck tied for the third most eagles in a season for NAU (2).Â
Buck's first round of play will tee off at 12:20 P.M. (MST) to begin the tournament on Sept. 14.Â
