LAS CRUCES, N.M. (September 22, 2019) – A late scored goal by freshman
Kiana Miyazato set the Northern Arizona University women's soccer team (3-4-1) up to win 1-0 against the New Mexico State University Aggies (1-5-2) today.
Previous to today's game, Miyazato had only played in three games, recording one shot. At the 75th minute of the game Miyazato took her second shot off of a pass from
Kayla Terhune, scoring a goal for the Lumberjacks. This goal records Miyazato's first collegiate goal as a Northern Arizona University Lumberjack.
"I felt great scoring my first collegiate goal," Miyazato said. "It was just awesome being able to score for my team and win."
Northern Arizona kept pressure on New Mexico State's goalkeeper, recording 24 shots with 11 on-goal. They recorded nine in the first and then rallied together during the second taking 15 shots.
Paige Maling led the 'Jacks with five total shots with one single on-goal. Miyazato, Terhune and
Kylie Kapustka followed closely behind, taking four shots each. Terhune had two shots-on-goal during the game and her second assist of the season. Kapustka and Miyazato both recorded three shots-on-goal.
Taryn Benham achieved her third shutout of the season. Her last two shutouts were found when the 'Jacks took on Iona College on August 25 and against Detroit Mercy Sept. 1. Last season, she had ten total shutouts, eight of them being against Big Sky Conference opponents.
NAU will be back at home this upcoming weekend after a long road game swing. The 'Jacks have not had a home game since Sept. 1 when they won against Detroit Mercy 4-0. This weekend, they will face the University of Houston Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. MST and begin their first Big Sky Conference match of the season against Southern Utah University Sunday, Sept. 29 at 1 p.m. MST.
