FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 27, 2019) – Tonight's game under the Friday lights resulted in a win for Northern Arizona University's women's soccer team (4-4-1) over the University of Houston (3-7).
The Lumberjacks scored each of their three goals during the first half of the game.
Mei-Te Coco scored the first goal at the 7th minute of the game. On a throw in,
Tatum Heeres received the ball, kicking it to Coco where she was able to find the back of the net.
29 minutes later, the 'Jacks scored their second goal of the night. This time,
Paige Maling scored from a free kick from
Whitney Winans. This marks as Maling's fourth goal of the season.
Just two minutes later,
Madison Montgomery scored her fifth goal of the season. After Houston fouled, Montgomery stepped up to take the free kick, breaking the ball through the wall of defenders in the box and scored the third and final goal for the 'Jacks.
The team totaled at eight shots with five being on-goal compared to the Cougars' five shots and four on-goal.
Both Coco and
Sam Larberg took two shots and one shot-on-goal. Montgomery, Maling, Winans and
Kalea Gurfield all took one shot, with Gurfield taking one on-goal.
Taryn Benham recorded her second shutout in a row tonight and her fourth shutout of the season.
The 'Jacks will be back at home again this Sunday, Sept. 29 to play their first conference match of the season against their Big Sky opponent, Southern Utah (0-8), at 1 p.m. at Lumberjack Stadium.
