FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (September 29, 2019) – Northern Arizona University women's soccer (5-4-1) team earned their second win of the weekend and their first conference match win of the season against Southern Utah University (0-9), winning 3-2.
The Lumberjacks took a total of 24 shots, 17 being on-goal. 15 were found in the first half, where the team was able to score two of their three goals.
The first goal scored was by junior
Paige Maling just four minutes into the game and marking her fifth goal of the season.
Kayla Terhune was able to slide the ball across the box to Maling, recording her third season assist.
At the 33rd minute, sophomore
Madison Montgomery was given the opportunity to take a free kick. On the kick, she sent the ball over to junior
Kylie Kapustka, who was able to record the second goal of the game and her second goal of the season.
Just shortly after NAU scored, SUU's Makenzie Lawrence scored their first goal of the game and their second season goal.
Senior
Tatum Heeres scored her first goal of the season at the 61st minute of the game. She was unassisted as she gained control of the ball, sending it in from the right corner of the box.
SUU's Madison DeHerrera scored their second goal of the game after a free kick placed directly in the box. The 'Jacks remained on top by one until the end of the match.
NAU kept the pressure on SUU's goalkeeper, Isabella Whitmore, forcing her to make 14 saves. Junior
Taryn Benham added on two saves today, making her career record 32.
The conference play for the Lumberjacks will continue next weekend with a pair of away games at Sacramento State on Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m. and at Portland State University on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
