NAU Swimming and Diving Sends Off to UCLA and Dixie State

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (January 15, 2020) – Northern Arizona University's swimming and diving will be traveling this weekend for two separate competitions. The divers will head to the west coast for a three-day UCLA Diving Invite running from Jan. 17-19. In the meantime, the swimmers will be going North to St. George Utah for their first dual meet against Dixie State, Jan. 18.

Diving at UCLA Diving Invite (Jan.17-19)
Diving will begin a three-day competition starting on Friday, Jan. 17 in Los Angeles, Calif. Friday will start with the 1-meter dive, followed by the 3-meter Saturday and platform on Sunday. Each day, the dives will kick off at 10:30 a.m.

"The girls have been training really hard over the break," head diving coach Nikki Huffman said. "It is going to be a long, very competitive meet, but I am excited to see them put their mental skills to work and have some of their performances against some of the best divers in the country."

Swimming at Dixie State (Jan. 18)
On Saturday, Jan. 18, Dixie State will host the Lumberjacks for their first ever meet beginning at 11 a.m. in their new Human Performance Center Pool.

The Trailblazers head into the day with five top five finishes at invitationals, taking first place at the Pepperdine Malibu Invitational, and a second-place finish at the Colorado Mesa A3 Performance Invitational. DSU, with a dual record of 2-3, found their two most recent losses in a dual meet against Colorado Mesa (132-185) and the Colorado School of Mines (147-187).

"Dixie State definitely has some quality student athletes," head coach Andy Johns said. "They're actually transitioning into the WAC next season. We're excited about going up there and swimming against a future conference opponent."

NAU is coming off of a tough double dual meet at Arizona and Northwestern on Jan. 3. Elisa Rodriguez, NAU's record holder in the 50 and 100 freestyle, found success both days, taking home the gold against both teams and taking in new season bests (100 free - 51.04; 50 free - 23.57).

The divers swept Arizona on the 1-meter platform, with Emily Sharrer leading the group (258.65), with Jenny Cheetham (256.25) just behind her, and Emily Luberto (221.65) rounding it out. Cheetham (252.90) and Luberto (238.80) took first and second on the 3-meter to Arizona, with Sharrer in fourth (227.30).
